The Back In Black series was created in reaction to events occurring in my immediate environment, along with those erupting in the world at large. Unable to work in my usual mode, I experimented by simplifying my mark-making, relying more heavily on shape and a limited palette dominated by black. My goal was to work with mixed black oils and explore the range they contain, as well as the effects created when different blacks are painted alongside one another. Black carries a host of associations: fear, mystery, power, elegance, and the unknown. This became both the subject of the work and a way to explore these ideas.
