In this series, called Transitions, I wanted to reflect the way events build, intersect and layer upon each other as we pass through time. Our experiences of life — the yin and yang, negative and positive — cycle into each other as time elapses. My expressive marks travel across the surface from one half of the picture plane to the other. The idea of cycles is also reflected in the repeated use of the circle as one of the central elements of my mark-making vocabulary. With the idea of a negative and positive relationship, some of my marks are additive in the way they overlay on top of the surface; other marks are subtractive in the way they scratch through that surface, revealing previous layers of color. Ultimately, it is the active tension created between the play of marks and the divided composition that assimilates into a single static representation of movement through time.
